I coach students to mastery
Coaching students to mastery should always be viewed as a process of frequent checks of understanding through many opportunities of deliberate practice. Homework is often misused practice as it usually helps students to refresh knowledge they already have rather than challenging them to practice new skills.
Practice should be deliberate meaning it focuses on developing the specific skill each student needs to master. When a teacher is coaching students to mastery, he/she is pinpointing specific skills that need to be practiced and providing multiple opportunities for students to practice and track their progress on the skill! Since coaching to mastery takes multiple opportunities to practice the same skill, the teacher will need several formative assessments to understand and connect what students know with what they need to know to develop mastery!
Here are some examples of a variety of activities that can be used to help coach students to mastery of identifying key details and main idea.
